AI is playing an increasingly important role in the transition to a sustainable, reliable, and efficient energy system. The growing digitization of the energy sector is creating new opportunities to organize complex issues surrounding energy generation, storage, distribution, and use in a smarter way.<h2>The Impact of AI on Energy</h2>The Netherlands is facing a radical shift: from a centralized, fossil-fuel-based energy system to a decentralized system based on renewable sources. This transition presents major challenges, such as grid congestion, fluctuating energy generation, and complex investment decisions.AI helps make these challenges more manageable:<ul><li data-list-item-id="e0e9ea14ed24ab36f88ae483ab8cb42c4">For investment and design issues, AI provides support through more accurate predictions, even based on limited data.</li><li data-list-item-id="e5cefa77d00e68d97bdfbcd61fb73f87d">AI makes it possible to comprehensively incorporate various interests and scenarios into the decision-making process.</li><li data-list-item-id="ed393f52adfabcdcff228eb82e11400d3">Transparency in models allows choices and uncertainties to be explained more clearly.</li><li data-list-item-id="e02a31b2f474e58a2ef2bb822422381b5">AI contributes to automation, optimization, and predictive maintenance.</li></ul>These developments also offer the Netherlands opportunities to become an international leader in energy innovations and AI applications.<h2>Opportunities for a CO₂-free energy system</h2>AI helps accelerate the energy transition by:<ul><li data-list-item-id="e94ba2142aef5489f9765ef149edcc39a">smarter management of energy production and consumption;</li><li data-list-item-id="e5f49696fbb29a6fd3683347a5537e5c2">more efficient use of existing infrastructure;</li><li data-list-item-id="e34c19173cb7efff7a40a6812c9182389">supporting new energy services and flexibility solutions;</li><li data-list-item-id="e862f6a4bd1b93db6cde91f58c092561f">predicting and preventing outages and maintenance.</li></ul>The opportunities and challenges of AI within the energy transition are described, among other places, in the position paper “AI as an Accelerator of the Energy Transition” (AIC4NL), which provides guidance for further development in this field.The use of AI also offers opportunities to make a difference in other societal issues related to sustainability. Examples include health and healthcare, education, agriculture and food, the manufacturing industry, the built environment, security, peace and justice, and the climate. In a separate workstream, we will soon identify which opportunities related to the use of AI and sustainability are important to address in the Netherlands.

AI is accelerating the transition to a sustainable and flexible energy system

In East Netherlands, companies, research institutions, and government agencies are collaborating closely on innovations that accelerate the energy transition. The focus is on decentralized energy generation, storage, and smart energy systems.Together with entrepreneurs in Gelderland and Overijssel, we are developing projects related to:<ul><li data-list-item-id="e09036e8fc48783e5e97dbc27e512d384">Digitization of energy grids (Smart Grids)</li><li data-list-item-id="eb78801b6112d441987cd704478596aa7">Green IT</li><li data-list-item-id="e4713fe89abfbabf7bb8e8a8ae6abb993">Sustainable Industries (reduction of energy and raw material consumption)</li><li data-list-item-id="e39364970867f1257df37ba83294a96ab">Secure and responsible data sharing</li></ul>AI technology helps, among other things, to limit investments in energy grids, optimize supply reliability, and reduce energy consumption.<h2>Strong ecosystem</h2>East Netherlands boasts a robust network of knowledge, innovation, and practical facilities in the fields of Energy &amp; AI.Partners: Radboud University, University of Twente, HAN University of Applied Sciences, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, and Windesheim University of Applied Sciences (energy research groups), KEMA Labs, TenneT, Alliander, Connectr, and Arnhem Electricity Campus.Key test sites and projects
